"I want to get colour into music: I'd like to play a note and have it come out as a color." Jimi Hendrix
Never a quote has
been more appropriate in describing a band's music and style. Here we are endowed
with an intense, colorful, dreamlike psychedelic rock and blues experience with
roots deep into funk, soul and rhythm 'n' blues.
Scott Finch and Gypsy is a multiform and multi-name band ensemble (Bluehand
and The Waltzing Tunas being their emanations) with a common vision and
a full-hearted inspirational gift, that brings out straight-ahead no-nonsense
rock and roll music, a unique blend of vibrations that successfully carries
and renovates the '60s and '70s legacy into present time.
Haze of Mother Nature, recorded between 1995 and 1999 is the first chapter
of the new course of Gypsy's creativity and also the first great release of
Comet's new astounding label Horizons, that will bring out more rippling new
recordings for the joy of rock, hard and psych rock fans all around the world.
Who is SCOTT FINCH ?
Scott Finch was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
He studied piano
since he was 3 1/2 years old and by 10 he was learning guitar.
. In 1964
he officiallly debuted playing rock songs with his first band The Palmetto.
Meanwhile,
as a teenager he was going through his musical experiences by listening to Dave
Brubeck, Chuck Berry, and then to the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Moby Grape.
Finally there came the great inspirer: Jimi Hendrix.
About Hendrix
Scott declares: "In the studio he was perfectly in tune, in time, he never left
a bad note hanging. He had a vibe that induced visions and in any given 10 seconds
played at least a couple of things that no one had ever played before. I became
obsessed with figuring out those unique moments."
And it is
Electric Ladyland that's leading Scott's 5 favorite albums. Follwoing, we find:
Axis Bold as Love, Abbey Road and The White Album by The Beatles and finally
Animals - Pink Floyd.
During the
late '60s and '70s Finch put together several bands. First came the Finch, a
4 piece psychedelic band that released a 45rpm Nothing in the Sun. Then came
Palmer House and finally White Lie a 5-member pop band with a female vocalist.
The latter recorded an LP titled True Confessions.
In 1986 Scott
Finch formed the Gypsy: "Gregg Slavik (the drummer) and I had played together
in White Lie but Joe Steil was from Plattville and we had never met until Gypsy,"
he recalls.
IThe
Gypsy played mostly in Wisconsin and labeled themselves as a "psychedelic blues
band". Their only project The Goddess was released, along with some demos, far
from the majors-controlled scene, as the band preferred to produce their own
recordings as they liked.
They also toured live until September 1989 and still do re-union gigs with their
original lineup once a year to very appreciative audiences.
Along with
Gypsy, the other present main band of Scott's is Bluehand, a solid 4 piece rock
band that's a great showcase for singer Peter Alt's incredible vocal ability.
Scott Finch
plays a 1962 Fender Stratocaster. The Gypsy stuff was all played thru a Fender
Superchamp ampli and some homemade 2-10" cabinets. The Bluehand songs were played
on an Ampeg Jet or a Vox AC30 thru a 4-10" Marshall cabinet.
